The Mountain Museum of Turin is a place that tends to represent the cultural value linked to the mountains of the entire planet.

The Museum is located in the center of Turin in the Monte dei Cappuccini convent; from it you can see the Alps and thus enjoy of a unique panorama that unites the city of Turin to the theme of the museum from a splendid panoramic terrace.

History of the National Mountain Museum of Turin

Opened by the Municipality of Turin in 1871 thanks to the bequest of the Fund for Cult of the Capuchin Convent, the Museum was initially an observation point astronomicaluntil 1877 when it began to think about an organization museum in separate rooms dedicated to different themes related to the mountains.

The first room was opened in 1885 with an exhibition of photographs of industries, the next contained scientific collections; but the leap was made with the donation of some objects by Prince Louis of Savoy, Duke of the Abruzzi linked to his expedition to the North Pole (1901) and with the International Exhibition held in Turin in 1911. From this moment the Mountain Museum, after having reached the peak of his popularity, he began to decay until closing in 1935.

The reopening was not long in coming. a lot (July 19, 1942) but the trial was hindered by the outbreak of the Second World War when the museum it was bombed and damaged in the roof and in some other architectural parts.

Since the 1950s attempts have been made to revalue the exhibition spaces but the attempts always fell on deaf ears until 1966 when the council of the Turin Section of the Italian Alpine Club dismantled the project. the exhibition facility to begin a complete renovation which however where wait until the end of 1970 to be put into operation thanks to the Rotary Club.

The new opening took place 13 July 1978 and completed on 21 March. The collection of the Mountain Museum went expanding over the years to become the most important in the sector at an international levelmaking the museum an important cultural center for the city of Turin.
