History of the Civic Museum of Ancient Art of Turin
In 1934 the ancient art collections of the civic museum of Turin (built in 1863) were moved from their original location (near the Mole Antonelliana) to Palazzo Madama.
The Civic Museum of Turin will open its doors to the public on 4 June 1863 in Via Gaudenzio Ferrari, hosting finds that testified to the millennial history of Turin including the archaeological finds coming from the large urban planning changes that affected the city during the nineteenth century. Also in the collection are relics of the Risorgimento, paintings and important collections of Savoy coins, relics dating from the period Byzantine to the 18th century.
The museum moved then to Palazzo Madama in 1933 until its long closure for restoration in 1987. Only in December 2006 was the Civic Museum of Ancient Art able to reopen the doors to the public.
