History of the Turin Cinema Museum
The first project for an Italian cinema museum was born in June 1941 from the idea of ??Maria Adriana Prolo (1901–1991), a Piedmontese scholar of history and cinema, who together with the director from Asti Giovanni Pastrone already director of Cabiria, the most great blockbuster of Italian silent cinema. With the first financial contributions, the first acquisitions of memorabilia and documents of the history of Italian cinema.
The objects of the collection that was forming were exhibited in a room of the Mole Antonelliana granted by the Municipality of Turin.
However, in 1953 a tornado damaged the building. seriously the building the Mole Antonelliana and the collection passedò to occupy the spaces of Palazzo Chiablese; a room was set up on the ground floor and another room was used for screenings, while the library and the film library were placed on the upper floor.
The inauguration took place to the public on September 27, 1958 and the first temporary exhibitions on the history of cinema were also held.
The history of the museum continued until 1983 when it was closed for safety reasons. In search of another permanent home, the collection finally landed in the same point from which it started 50 years earlier: the Mole Antonelliana.
In 1995 on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of cinema it was decided to move inside the Mole and in 2000 the Turin Cinema Museum, with scenography designed by the Turin architect Gianfranco Gritella and the Swiss set designer François Confino, it was opened to the public again.
The success was immediate and the museum - with over two million visitors in the first five and a half years of activity - entered in the list of the most Italian museums loved by the public.
In 2006 - on the occasion of the XX Olympic Winter Games in Turin - the setup was renewed with new multimedia and interactive stations and new rooms dedicated to westerns, musicals and science fiction.
